Business as usual?

For a lot of people, working from home is a standard feature of their everyday lives – their days have structure and routines are well established, but for others the concept presents all kinds of challenges.

First of all, if you are very active in your job, going from place to place and interacting face to face with colleagues, being stuck at home and working in effective isolation can actually make you feel like you’ve lost your job, even though you haven’t. It can be difficult to maintain the camaraderie that inevitably comes with working closely with people.

Second, setting up a routine and sticking to it can be difficult initially – there are always distractions (welcome or otherwise) and things to do that will crop up on a daily basis. Being able to allow a degree of flexibility and not being too harsh with ourselves is important in this respect.

Finally, it can be frustrating and stressful when there are so many unknowns about what is happening and what the future will bring. It can be hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Essentially, keeping up with regular communication, keeping people engaged, encouraged and motivated are all key while at the same making the most of all the new opportunities for fun and friendship. Some organisations need to hold regular meetings or conferences and ensuring that all participants are online at the same time can be stressful and needs careful planning and execution.
