Nine killed in second Nepali bus crash in two days

  • 7-16-2012

At least nine people have been killed in a bus accident in Nepal, police say, just one day after another deadly crash killed dozens.

Monday's accident happened as the bus swerved off the road into a river.

Rescue workers are still searching the water for missing passengers.

At least 39 people, mostly Hindu pilgrims from India, were killed on Sunday after a bus plunged into a canal near the town of Parasi, in south-west Nepal.

"We recovered six bodies from the accident site and three seriously injured died in hospital in Kathmandu," police official Narayan Prasad Chalise said after Monday's accident.

"Another 17 people are injured and are undergoing treatment, " he added.

Buses are often overcrowded in Nepal and accidents on poorly-maintained mountain roads are common.
