Focus on cyber at Security & Counter Terror Expo 2017

Writing recently in the Sunday Times, Ciaran Martin revealed that Britain's security has been threatened by 188 high-level cyber attacks in the last three months, most of which threatened national security.

The overall number of incidents the US experienced the previous year, totalled at 77,000, a 1,300 per cent increase over the last decade. The effect of this has resulted in the American citizens ranking cyber attacks second only to the so-called Islamic State on a global threats list.

This year’s Security & Counter Terror Expo – which will run from May 3-4 at Olympia London – will feature the Cyber Threat Intelligence conference, providing security professionals with a platform to discuss the evolving cyber threat. Answering questions posed by the industry, debating the challenges presented across the cyber spectrum and detailing best practice responses, experts from across the globe will help protect assets and civilians from future attacks.

The two-day programme begins with ‘The ENISA Threat Landscape 2017’, an independent analysis of the top cyber threats and emerging trends this year that will be presented by Dr. Louis Marinos, NIS R&A expert. Following this, Paul Thorlby, CTO at Qinetiq, will identify ways the industry can close the cyber skills gap and develop a pathway for the next generation of experts.

Talal Rajab, techUK’s Head of Programme, Cyber, National Security, said: “The cyber terrorism threat grows immeasurably year-on-year and we as an industry, must grow, adapt and react in equal measure. Security & Counter Terror Expo provides the opportunity to learn from and meet with some of the key figures in the sector addressing the most important issues we face today.”

With the UK electorate voting for Brexit last year and Prime Minister Theresa May committed to triggering Article 50 in March, cyber security has a new obstacle to surmount. The sharing of information between governments and industry and the implementation of GDPR post-Brexit will all be discussed by John Godwin of UK Cloud.

Furthermore, with the opening of GCHQ’s new National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) last October, Security and Counter Terror Expo will present its latest findings, including a view on the current situation and look to the future.

Former Chancellor, George Osbourne, pledged the UK would invest £1.9bn over five years in protecting the UK economy and infrastructure, growing cyber agencies and deterring adversaries. The NCSC is a product of this and stands on the front line between the UK and cyber terrorism. On day one of the Security & Counter Terror Expo, the NCSC Chief Executive, Ciaran Martin, will provide a keynote address on the current and future threat in cyber space and how prepared the UK is.

Security & Counter Terror Expo serves a vital role in delivering a unique environment in which global security professionals can source cyber security solutions. Cogia, iStorage and Dataminr are among the tech companies to already confirm their presence at 2017 show.

David Thompson, Security and Counter Terror Expo Event Director, added: “It’s now more important than ever for the security industry to unite, share best practice and work together against the ever-changing threat posed by terrorists. We are pleased to be able to facilitate this and provide a platform for 360-degree learning and development.”

Peter Wood, CEO, First Base Technologies; Nader Heinen, Regional Director, Advanced Security Assurance Advisory, BlackBerry; Ron Gregory, Estates & Facilities Compliance Manager, Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust; and Jenny Radcliffe aka 'The People Hacker' are just a few of the prominent industry names confirmed to speak at the event.

In addition to this, the latest advances in cutting-edge technology will be showcased alongside strategic developments from industry figureheads.

Security and Counter Terror Expo 2017 is co-located with Forensics Europe Expo and Ambition – the EPRR Expo.

Crisis Response Journal will be at the CTX, visit us on stand J85 and meet the new team.
