Paola Albrito

Paola is Chief of Branch, Intergovernmental processes, Interagency co-operation and Partnerships, within United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction in Geneva.

Previous to this role, she was the Chief of the Regional Office for Europe at the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) .

Paola joined UNISDR during the preparations for the World Conference on Disaster Reduction in 2004, where she fed the conference with the Outcome Analysis Document on the status of risk reduction implementation at the global level. She assisted the inter-governmental Drafting Committee and Main Committee of the Conference in charge of developing the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015, Building the Resilience of Nations and Communities to Disasters, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly and by the World Conference on Disaster Reduction held in Japan, January 2005.

From 2005 to 2008 she worked on policy-issues-related topics particularly associated with the Hyogo Framework, including development of guidelines on indicators towards assessing disaster risks and the mainstreaming of disaster risk reduction sustainable development policy and programme.

At the beginning of her career, Paola worked, at the United Nations Staff System College in Turin, where she supported UN country teams in developing sustainable development policies. In 2000, she joined the UN Resident Co-ordinator Office in Djibouti, co-ordinating the development of the Common Country Assessment and the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (programmes addressing sustainable development issues). She also worked as an independent consultant with programme evaluations within the Internal Labor Organisation.

Paola holds a Masters in International Relations and Political Science, University of Turin, with thesis research conducted at the International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS), London. She speaks Italian, French, English and some Russian.
